. kristen and eric? >> we start 6:00 with developing news from the abc7 at 11. right knew, oakland police are still surrounding a neighborhood after someone opened fire and wounded an undercover officer. amy joins us live with the search underway. amy? >> this is still in sign of the two men they are looking for. look behind me, the swat team is still engaged in this case with a section of seminary blocked off. you can see the swat vehicle located in the middle of the street. no one is being allowed in or out without a police escort. the officers approve who gets in or out. we were overhead when police say an officer was shot at 6:30. he was working undercover vetting another shooting when he was confronted by three armed men. police say he was shot in the arm. they were able to arrest one suspect. the other two suspects got away. police are still looking on them but they need help. >> we want to ask the community to continue to be vigilant. please contact the oakland police department nonemergency number reporting suspicious activists involving two individuals from the area. >> the chief

leader will be brought in to help oakland fight crime. after hours of heated debate the safety committee votes yes to get extra help. no to bill bratton. kristy smith is live at oakland police headquarters with more for us. good morning, kristy? >> good morning, john. oakland has seen a spike in violent crime. six homicides this year so far. in fact, last friday there were four homicides in ten hours. the city is looking at a plan to bring in an outside consultant to bring the crime rate down. that's sparked a lively and heated debate. just last night, hundreds of people packed into a public safety committee often getting loud and booing police chief jordan, stopping him from explaining why he supports a plan to spend $250,000 to pay former police chief bill bratton to give advice on how to stop crime in oakland. he worked in new york and had success in l.a. as well. opponents say bratton won't help but will rely on policies like stop and frisk, things they say lead to racial profiling. they say jordan doesn't need that. >> if you need to hear what he has to say, why don't you have jorda

in oakland at 9:00 in a hotel. officers say he surrendered peacefully. he is accused of setting his girlfriend on fire. the 25-year-old starr lamare, she has three small children, was dating oliver. her smoldering sweater was lying in street after she ripped it off. this is an image that was so disturbing for the witnesses. they say it was horrible to watch her run and scream and trying to get sweater off. this happened sunday afternoon. witnesses say the couple was arguing and oliver got gasoline and he pored it on on starr lamare and lit her on fire. she has burns to her face and she will probably be in the hospital for four to five months. one of her sisters told me that she was hoping he would be caught alive. she said she thought debt was too easy and she wants him to sit in jail and think about her sister. he now is in jail and bliss will charge him with arson and attempted murder. live in san francisco for abc7 news. >> thankthank you, this morninge bar pilot who was guiding an oil tanker that scraped the bay bridge yesterday is due to face investigators' questions. the tanke

bay. an all-night search continues for two suspects who shot an undercover police officer in oakland. police say the officer was doing an investigation on seminary avenue a few blocks away from the oakland coliseum. that's when three armed men confronted him and shot him in the arm. the suspects took off. officers locked down that neighborhood and launched a full scale intensive search both on the ground and in the air. police were able to catch one of these suspects but two others are still on the run today. the injured officer is being treated at a local hospital and he is expected to recover. we're waiting to hear more from police this morning. we'll bring you the latest information just as soon as we get it. >>> this attack comes hours before the oakland city council is set to vote on a controversial plan to deal with violence in the city. the police chief and the mayor want to spend $250,000 to hire former new york and l.a. police chief big bratton as a consultant to help reduce violent crime. bratton is a controversial pick because of his support for stop and frisk police tacti

, oakland police say they are holding a news conference to talk about two recent shootings that injured police officers. police say a 13-year-old veteran was shot and wounded by a suspect during a foot chase in the fruitvale district on friday. five days earlier, on january 21st, an undercover police officer was shot and wounded while working on seminary avenue. full recoveries are expected for both officers. >>> the super bowl found 49ers are already in the big easy this morning. fans waved 49er faithful fashion as the team took off for new orleans yesterday at noon. five hours later, they touched down in new orleans for a week of practice before the game. the odds are on the niners' side. they are favored to beat the ravens. san francisco has been to the super bowl five times and they've won each game. the last one in 1995. 49ers have settled in at their new headquarters in downtown new orleans. fans greeted the players and took pictures with them in front of large banners. today, the team will begin weight lifting, practice and team meetings and we have our own team in new orleans. t

of my battling a 2 alarm fire last night in a vacant oakland home. here is video from the scene. the fire for started around 5:00 p.m., and the 600 block of harrison street near oakland's chinatown neighborhood. when firefighters arrived they found two people on a neighboring roof, and it appeared that they had stayed there from the burning home. the two were detained by oakland police for questioning. authorities say that the building is a total loss. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. >> meanwhile, police are investigating a body that was found along the alameda shore line. authorities say a man was walking down a path at robert w. crowned memorial state beach and noticed a body or around 10:00 a.m. yesterday morning. alameda fire crews pulled on the man's body from the water near was blind and shoreline drives. he is believed to be 87 between 20 and 30 years old, he was fully close with no obvious sign of trauma. if police believe that the body had been in the water for about six hours. the alameda county coroner's office is working to identify the man. >> if

. >>> the man accused of killing two teenage girls in oakland last november expected to return to court today. powell and edwards now facing charges for the shooting deaths of 16-year-old bobbie sartain and 15-year-old raquel gerstel. prosecutors say these girls described as best friends were gunned down in oakland on the morning of november 25th. the suspects are expected to enter their pleas today. >>> funeral services will be held this morning for a hit-and-run victim who died during a new year's day police chase in san francisco. he was hit by a car while he was walking into a liquor store in the mission district. two other bystanders were also hit and killed. police say the chase started after receiving reports of shots fired at a nearby apartment complex. meantime, the 19-year-old suspect is awaiting trial. the board of pilot commissioners will meet this morning for the first time since the tanker crashed into the bay bridge. the board's agenda does not include the crash but board members could talk about the january 7th incident. it was foggy when the tanker sideswiped the bridge. ther

this morning, an update to a story we have been following in the east bay. the oakland zoo says the alligator that was found just yesterday guarding a stash of pot inside a castro valley home has died. alameda county sheriff's deputies found the gator named mr. teeth when doing a routine probation check. it was in a tank, apparently guarding 34 pounds of dried marijuana. the gator was taken to the oakland zoo where it was placed in quarantine after its owner said it was very sick. that owner is now in jail. >>> some relief for a hayward mother whose daughter was kidnapped in 1998 and never seen again. a bone fragment found in a well in linden does not match michaele garecht's dna. the well is believed to be a dumping ground for the so-called speed freak killers. in a blog post, garecht says she's disappointed there's still no answer what happened to michaela but goes on to say, quote, the feeling i felt was a sense of relief. >>> san francisco police are hoping surveillance video will help them catch a suspected killer. police say this video right here shows a clean-shaven man with long hair

in 30 minutes. >> to suspects in the murders of two teen girls in oakland are due in court. the 18-year-old faces two counts of murder and possibly the death penalty. the 19-year-old is charged as an accessory. the victims were best friends, 15-year-old and a 16-year-old. they were found shot several times in east oakland in november. witnesses say there was an argument before the deadly shooting. >> this morning, police are searching for the suspect would shot a 16-year-old girl on the peninsula right across the street from the high school on the border of san bruno on saturday night. the teen is from south san francisco. investigators say she was wounded in the stomach and leg and is expected to survive. police have not said what led to the shooting. >> sheriff deputies are looking for a hitchhiker who stabbed a driver who gave him a ride. the santa rose press democrat reports there was a driver in the car and he picked up the hitch hitchhiker on saturday night. investigators are not sure but the hitchhiker stabbed the driver twice before the driver was able to get him out of the car.
